Warning Signs of a Dangerous Tree

Trees are a vital part of our landscape, but when they become compromised, they can pose serious risks to people and property. Knowing how to identify a dangerous tree can save lives.

How to Spot a Hazardous Tree

Many homeowners are unaware that the trees on their property could be ticking time bombs. Here are the most common warning signs that a tree may be dangerous:

  • Dead branches in the crown — Large deadwood above walking areas or structures can fall without warning, especially during storms.
  • Cracks or splits in the trunk — Vertical cracks and seams indicate internal structural failure that can lead to sudden collapse.
  • Leaning trunk beyond its natural lean — A sudden lean or shift from the tree's normal position may signal root failure.
  • Branches growing from one spot — Co-dominant stems with included bark create weak attachment points prone to splitting.

Below the Surface: Root & Base Issues

Some of the most dangerous signs of tree failure originate underground, where they are harder to detect. Our ISA-certified arborists are trained to evaluate these hidden threats.

  • Conks or mushrooms at the base — Fungal fruiting bodies indicate advanced internal decay and wood decomposition.
  • Cavities or hollows in the trunk — Large cavities significantly reduce the structural strength of the tree.
  • Damaged or exposed roots — Construction damage, soil compaction, or root severance compromise the tree's stability.
  • Signs of root rot — Soft, mushy wood near the base, soil heaving, or a hollow sound when tapping the trunk.

When Is Tree Removal Necessary?

Not every damaged tree needs to come down. Our certified arborists evaluate each situation to determine whether a tree can be saved or must be removed for safety.

Removal Is Recommended When:

  • More than 50% of the tree is dead or dying
  • Severe trunk decay or hollow exceeds one-third of the trunk diameter
  • Major root damage from construction or disease
  • The tree is leaning toward structures, power lines, or walkways
  • History of dropping large limbs

The Tree May Be Salvageable When:

  • Deadwood can be pruned without removing more than 25% of the canopy
  • Cabling and bracing can support weak branches
  • Root damage is limited and can be managed
  • Targeted pest or disease treatment is viable

Our Safe Removal Process

With over 30 years of experience, our team follows a proven step-by-step approach to ensure every dangerous tree is removed safely and efficiently.

1. Site Assessment

Our ISA-certified arborist evaluates the tree, its surroundings, and identifies all potential hazards before any work begins.

2. Removal Plan

A detailed plan is created including rigging points, drop zones, equipment needs, and safety protocols for the crew.

3. Safety Zone Setup

The work area is secured with barriers and signage. Nearby structures are protected. All crew members are briefed.

4. Controlled Removal

Using precision rigging and sectional cutting techniques, the tree is dismantled in controlled sections from top to bottom.

5. Complete Cleanup

All debris is chipped or hauled away. The site is raked clean. You would never know we were there.

After the Tree Is Down

Removing the tree is only part of the job. We ensure your property is fully restored with comprehensive post-removal services.

  • Stump grinding — We grind the stump 6-12 inches below grade to allow for replanting or landscaping.
  • Soil management — Compacted or disturbed soil is assessed and restored to support healthy growth.
  • Replanting guidance — We recommend species suited to your soil, sunlight, and space for a healthier landscape.
  • Site grading — The area is levelled and prepared for your next landscaping project.
